Sardinia's sacred protohistoric sites undergo UNESCO evaluation

The Italian Ministry of Culture and the National UNESCO Commission have officially launched the preliminary evaluation process for the inscription of Sardinia’s protohistoric sacred architecture onto the UNESCO World Heritage List. The candidacy, titled “Architecture and sacred spaces, the sacredness of protohistoric Sardinia,” focuses on the spiritual landscape left by the Nuragic civilization between 1800 and 800 BCE.

The proposal highlights unique archaeological sites, including sacred wells, giant's tombs, and stone towers that can reach heights of 30 meters. These monuments represent a civilization with extraordinary engineering capabilities and a profound spiritual connection to the Mediterranean landscape. The project was originally promoted by the “Sardegna Terra di Nuraghi” association and has received significant support from the Regional Government of Sardinia.

Regional President Alessandra Todde emphasized that the candidacy is a way for Sardinia to communicate its history within a Mediterranean context, aiming to promote the protection, accessibility, and international recognition of its identity and monumental heritage.
