Sare offers hiking and Basque culture in the Pyrenees
Sare, located in Lapurdi near the Pyrenees, is recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in the Iparralde region. The area is characterized by Basque culture, green meadows, and traditional architecture featuring white facades with red or green timber framing.
A notable local attraction is the Sare caves and the hiking route to Mount Axuria, also known as Peña Plata due to its limestone appearance. The 8-kilometer circular trail follows an ancient path once used by smugglers to transport goods between Spain and France. The hike involves a 400-meter elevation gain through oak and chestnut forests, offering 360-degree views from the summit.
