Sarfaraz Khan joins India Test squad for Sri Lanka series

Sarfaraz Khan has been named as the replacement for Sai Sudharsan in the Indian Test squad for the upcoming two-match series against Sri Lanka. Sudharsan was ruled out due to a toe stress reaction sustained during the India A tour.

Sarfaraz, a Mumbai batter, returns to the Test setup after nearly two years, having last appeared against New Zealand in late 2024. His inclusion follows a strong domestic season where he scored 429 runs in the Ranji Trophy at an average of 53.62. Reports indicate his selection was influenced by his ability to play spin, a crucial factor given the expected conditions at the Galle International Cricket Stadium.

The series, which is part of the ICC World Test Championship cycle, is scheduled to begin on August 15 in Galle, with the second Test following in Colombo on August 23. While Sarfaraz's aggressive batting style has been noted, some analysts suggest his selection may impact the tactical balance of the middle order compared to the more traditional top-order profile of Sudharsan.
