Sargassum Overwhelms Cancun Beaches, Prompting Tourist Reroutes Across Riviera Maya

A massive influx of sargassum has blanketed the beaches of Cancun, Tulum and Playa del Carmen in Quintana Roo, with piles up to 50 cm thick and a strong rotten‑egg odor that blocks access to the sea. Tourists – both Mexican and foreign – are altering itineraries, moving to cleaner spots such as Isla Mujeres, Holbox, cenotes or staying in hotel pools. One visitor from Puebla said she could only reach Playa Tortugas after three days, while a graduate‑trip group from Chihuahua relocated to Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres, and a traveler from Tampico spent most of her stay in hotel facilities.

The hotel sector estimates a 30 % drop in beach‑related consumption and, through the Association of Hotels of the Riviera Maya, is promoting alternative experiences and investing heavily in containment. Federal authorities, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, have activated an emergency plan that includes 11 sargassum‑catcher vessels, 16 km of barriers, cleaning brigades along 50 km of priority coastline and a budget of more than 2 billion pesos for monitoring, collection, disposal and possible reuse of the algae.
