Sargassum seaweed crisis threatens Caribbean coastlines

The Caribbean is facing an unprecedented sargassum crisis, with brown seaweed biomass exceeding historical averages by 75%. This massive influx of algae is driven by rising ocean temperatures, shifting wind patterns, and excessive nutrient runoff from agrochemicals. In Mexico, the coasts of Quintana Roo are receiving approximately 90,000 tons of sargassum daily, creating barriers that deplete oxygen and release hydrogen sulfide odors.

While the seaweed poses a significant threat to local ecosystems and tourism, certain destinations remain relatively safer options for travelers. In Aruba, locations such as Eagle Beach and Baby Beach offer high-quality coastal experiences. Other areas with lower exposure to the seaweed include Miches in the Dominican Republic and the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao).
