Sargassum surge overwhelms 35 Quintana Roo beaches in Mexico

Monitoring by the Sargassum Observation Network shows that on 9 June 2026 dozens of beaches along Quintana Roo's Caribbean coast reported low or no algae, with green and blue indicators on the sargassum traffic‑light system. By the following day, 10 June 2026, the same monitoring indicated 35 beaches experiencing excessive sargassum levels (red), especially in Tulum, the Riviera Maya and eastern Cozumel, disrupting tourist activities.

State senator Ivonne Ortega Pacheco called for a federal response, urging the Mexican government to assume full responsibility for prevention, correction and adaptation measures. She warned that the crisis has been handled fragmentedly and that a clear national norm is needed to protect coastal communities and the tourism sector.

The widespread algal bloom continues to strain local economies, prompting both private cleanup efforts and political pressure for comprehensive environmental policy.
