Letitia James and Saritha Komatireddy clash in New York AG debate
New York Attorney General Letitia James and Republican challenger Saritha Komatireddy engaged in a heated televised debate centered on crime, bail reform, and state spending. Komatireddy, a former federal prosecutor, criticized James for her support of the state’s bail laws, which she described as a “catch-and-release system.” She proposed allowing judges to assess a defendant’s potential danger to the public before determining pretrial release.
Financial oversight was another major point of contention. Komatireddy accused James of failing to adequately investigate Medicaid fraud, claiming that annual recoveries dropped from approximately $250 million under previous administrations to $19 million during James’s tenure. She also highlighted rising antisemitism and public safety concerns, citing a recent incident involving the stabbing of an NYPD officer.
James defended her record by focusing on the political affiliations of her opponent, repeatedly characterizing Komatireddy as a “Trump puppet.” James argued that Komatireddy’s proposals lack compassion and fail to address the root causes of crime, such as mental health, noting that federal funding for state crisis services has been cut under the current administration.
