Sarkodie credits Twi language for international music success

Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has stated that rapping in his mother tongue, Twi, has been a fundamental driver of his global success. In a recent interview in Kenya, the artist reflected on his decision to transition from rapping in English to Twi, a move he initially feared would limit his international appeal.

Sarkodie noted that performing in English often left him feeling at a disadvantage when competing with global artists. By embracing Twi, he found he could express emotions more authentically and gained the confidence to compete on the world stage. He cited his BET Award win and performances at London’s Royal Albert Hall as evidence that maintaining cultural identity does not hinder international reach. He also mentioned an upcoming appearance at the O2 Arena as a continuation of this trajectory.
