Sarna outbreaks in Argentina and Peru trigger preventive measures for sheep and vicuñas
Argentina's National Service of Agri-Food Health and Quality (Senasa) has reinforced protocols to prevent, control and eradicate ovine scabies (caused by the mite Psoroptes ovis) in Patagonia. The agency advises a minimum three‑week quarantine for incoming animals, biannual herd inspections, thorough disinfection of equipment, and maintenance of perimeter fencing. Any suspected case must be reported immediately so that coordinated treatment, including immersion baths under veterinary supervision, can be applied. The sanitary alert remains in effect in several Chubut departments until 31 December 2026.
In Peru's Huancavelica region, residents have documented severe sarna infections in wild vicuñas, noting extensive skin lesions, fiber loss and weakness. Local communities have called on environmental and health authorities to conduct a sanitary assessment, determine the outbreak’s scope and implement control actions to protect the species and the high‑Andean ecosystem.
