Saronic Technologies breaks ground on $3B shipyard in South Texas
Vice President JD Vance and Texas Governor Greg Abbott attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Saronic Technologies’ Port Alpha shipyard at the Port of Brownsville. The project represents more than $3 billion in private capital investment and is expected to be one of the largest economic development projects in Texas history.
The 800-acre facility will manufacture both manned and autonomous vessels for the U.S. military and commercial sectors. The shipyard is projected to create at least 10,000 jobs and generate an estimated economic impact of up to $264.5 billion for the state. Upon completion, the site is expected to add 150,000 gross tons of annual shipbuilding capacity, which would more than double the current U.S. commercial shipbuilding capacity.
Saronic Technologies, an Austin-based defense technology startup, is working with regional educational institutions and local government to establish technical training programs and engineering pipelines to support the new workforce.
