SAS implements cost-cutting measures amid rising fuel prices
SAS has initiated new cost-saving measures following a significant increase in aviation fuel costs. According to internal communications from CEO Anko van der Werff and CFO Jonathan Wallden, fuel represents the airline’s largest expense, necessitating a review of the flight program.
The company is evaluating whether specific departures generate sufficient revenue to cover costs; if not, those routes may be removed, and passengers relocated. While SAS maintains a large network in Norway—including connections to Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, Trondheim, and Tromsø—some routes, such as those between Oslo and Bergen or Stavanger and Trondheim, have reportedly already been affected.
Beyond flight schedules, the airline is tightening its hiring freeze, potentially halting ongoing recruitment, and reducing the use of consultants and external resources.
