Sicilian Antimafia Commission reports mismanagement at Sas

The Sicilian Regional Antimafia Commission has unanimously approved a 37-page report detailing what it describes as an “out of control” management system at Servizi Ausiliari Sicilia (Sas), a regional public-owned company. The investigation, which covered the period from January 2023 to March 2026, highlights significant waste of public funds, irregular hiring practices, and a system of favoritism based on political, family, or friendship ties.

Key findings include duplicate assignments, excessive external consultancy fees, and large financial transactions, such as a 600,000-euro payment to a rebellious employee despite previous legal losses. The report also scrutinizes the hiring of workers from protected categories, noting irregularities involving cooperatives and the use of tutors not belonging to those categories.

The commission, led by President Antonello Cracolici, has forwarded the findings to the regional government, the National Anti-Corruption Authority (Anac), the Court of Auditors, and the Public Prosecutor's Office in Palermo. Following these findings, the commission announced it will extend its investigations to other regional companies, specifically Seus and Cefpas, to address systemic vulnerabilities in oversight.
