Saskatchewan announces nuclear power strategy for 2050

The Government of Saskatchewan has unveiled a new strategy, ‘Delivering Energy Security Through Nuclear Power’, aimed at establishing nuclear energy as a core component of the province’s long-term energy plan. The government has set a target to produce at least 2,600 megawatts (MW) of nuclear power by 2050 to support population growth, industrial expansion, and resource development.

The plan emphasizes the use of nuclear energy to provide reliable, non-emitting baseload electricity that complements the province’s existing energy mix, which includes coal, wind, solar, hydro, and natural gas. Preparatory work for this transition includes technical assessments, regulatory readiness, and engagement with public and Indigenous communities.

Sheldon Wuttunee of the Saskatchewan First Nations Natural Resource Centre of Excellence participated in the announcement, highlighting the collaborative nature of the strategy. The province intends to leverage experience gained from small modular reactor deployment to ensure grid reliability and economic growth.
