Saskatchewan cities manage flooding and sinkholes after heavy rainfall
Heavy rainfall across Saskatchewan during the Labour Day long weekend has caused localized flooding and infrastructure damage. A low-pressure system brought over 100 mm of precipitation to several regions, with Regina reporting approximately 108 mm.
In Regina, the intense rain led to the closure of highway underpasses and the deterioration of a sinkhole near Rochdale Park. City officials have moved to an emergent response for the sinkhole and requested that residents temporarily reduce non-essential water use to alleviate pressure on the wastewater system.
In Weyburn, 106.9 mm of rain overwhelmed municipal drainage systems, impacting homes and businesses. The city council is set to discuss a flood application to the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP).
Environment Canada has issued moderate rainfall warnings for several areas, including Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Swift Current, Maple Creek, and Langham, as rain is expected to continue through the week.
