Saskatchewan marks Treaty 6 anniversary and announces data centre rules

In Saskatchewan, the provincial government and Treaty 6 First Nations are commemorating the 150th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 6. A four-day gathering was held at Fort Carlton Provincial Historic Park featuring ceremonies, cultural programming, and Treaty forums. To honor the legacy of the First Nations leaders, a permanent 50-foot-tall steel tipi monument will be installed at the park. The project is being led by Beardy’s and Okemasis’ Cree Nation, with $140,000 in funding provided by the Government of Saskatchewan.

Separately, the Saskatchewan government has introduced a new framework for data centre development. Under the new rules, companies planning to build data centres in the province must be Canadian-owned and must supply their own electricity. Crown Investments Corporation Minister Jeremy Harrison stated that these measures are intended to ensure Canadian data protection and maintain utility reliability, noting that security over artificial intelligence will become as vital as energy security.
