Saskatchewan provincial courts to allow eagle feathers for oaths
The Provincial Court of Saskatchewan has announced that individuals swearing oaths or making affirmations during legal proceedings may now use eagle feathers. This change is part of the court's commitment to inclusion.
The court was gifted 14 eagle feathers by a judge’s sister. These feathers will be made available at each of the court's 13 permanent locations. Additionally, individuals may arrange to have feathers available for hearings held outside of permanent locations or bring their own eagle feathers to court.
Chief Judge Shannon Metivier stated that the court recognizes the cultural importance of the feathers and is committed to treating them with respect and care. While the primary announcement concerns Saskatchewan, the use of eagle feathers for testifying is also permitted in other provinces, including Manitoba, Ontario, and Nova Scotia.
