Saskatchewan social services worker criticizes systemic issues

Rae Seidel, a former child and caregiver support worker for the Saskatchewan Ministry of Social Services, has raised concerns regarding systemic issues within the province's social services sector. Seidel reported that persistent understaffing, inadequate mental health support, and delays in reimbursements for emergency spending have hindered the ability to provide consistent care for children.

Seidel noted that high staff turnover and vacant positions often lead to communication breakdowns, where children and families are unable to reach their assigned social workers. She expressed concern that these conditions prevent the system from effectively preparing children to become productive members of society.

In response, the Ministry of Social Services stated it has implemented initiatives to improve recruitment and retention. These efforts include a focus on hiring Indigenous and northern employees, as well as supporting the psychological health and wellness of staff. The ministry reported positive provincial results, citing increased applications, successfully filled vacancies, and improved retention rates in Child and Family programs.
