Saskatchewan to impose 50% levy on US spirit imports

Saskatchewan will impose a 50 per cent levy on imported American spirits starting September 8. Premier Scott Moe announced the measure as a reciprocal response to United States tariffs placed on Canadian alcohol products on August 22.

Unlike federal tariffs, this charge will be collected and managed by the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA). The provincial government rejected calls from the opposition NDP to ban American alcohol entirely, stating that the decision to purchase these products should remain with consumers.

According to Premier Moe, sales of American alcohol in the province have already decreased by approximately 40 per cent, while sales of locally produced products have seen an increase.
