Sasol urges scientists to reduce green hydrogen costs

Sasol has called upon scientists and engineers to address the high costs and efficiency limitations associated with green hydrogen. Speaking at the 19th Pujiang Innovation Forum in Shanghai, Dr. Theo Mudzunga, Sasol’s Vice-President for Fundamental Science Research, emphasized that decarbonization technologies must move beyond research laboratories to become commercially viable.

Dr. Mudzunga highlighted that power-to-liquids technology—which combines renewable electricity, green hydrogen, and captured carbon dioxide to create sustainable liquid fuels—is currently hindered by high production costs and scaling difficulties. He urged the next generation of researchers to focus on improving hydrogen efficiency, increasing yields, and reducing overall costs to facilitate the energy transition.

The forum, where South Africa was designated as the Country of Honour, included a delegation led by South Africa’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Blade Nzimande.
