SASSA reports R1.28 billion in grants paid to eligible foreign nationals
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) disclosed that approximately R1.28 billion was paid to legally eligible foreign nationals during the 2025/26 financial year. Social Development Minister Dina Pule provided these figures in response to a parliamentary inquiry, noting that the expenditure represents less than one percent of South Africa’s total social assistance budget.
Of the total, permanent residents received roughly R1.12 billion, with the largest portions allocated to Older Persons Grants (R931.5 million), Child Support Grants (R134.5 million), and Disability Grants (R31.7 million). Recognised refugees received approximately R150.8 million, primarily through Child Support Grants.
Additionally, R10.6 million was distributed via Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R370 payments to qualifying individuals, including holders of Lesotho Exemption Permits, Zimbabwean Exemption Permit holders, and recognised asylum seekers. Minister Pule emphasized that all assistance is strictly limited to individuals meeting specific legal eligibility criteria, including South African citizens, permanent residents, and recognised refugees.
