Sassari Metropolitan City approves wild boar control plan

The Metropolitan City of Sassari has approved a wild boar population control plan for the period 2023–2027, receiving favorable opinions from ISPRA and the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection (RAS). The initiative aims to manage the growing presence of wild boars in urban and peri-urban areas to reduce damage to agricultural production, livestock, and road safety.

Currently, approximately 740 authorizations are active for private individuals to manage wild boar culling through authorized assistants. The strategy focuses on agricultural zones where the impact is most severe, utilizing methods such as selective culling, monitoring, and the installation of electrified fences or deterrents.

To enhance the plan, authorities are working to integrate new operational methodologies, including the potential use of tracking dogs. The Metropolitan City is also providing the 67 municipalities within its jurisdiction with new monitoring tools and technical expertise to coordinate interventions across all institutional levels.
