Sassuolo hosts cultural events for Queen Christina of Sweden's 400th anniversary
To mark the 400th anniversary of the birth of Queen Christina of Sweden (1626–1689), Sassuolo is hosting a series of cultural initiatives to explore her historical and intellectual legacy.
The program highlights the Queen's connection to the Estense Duchy, specifically a private diplomatic meeting held in Sassuolo in May 1658 between Christina and Duke Francesco I d’Este to discuss political alliances.
A documentary exhibition, ‘Maggio 1658: Cristina a Sassuolo. L’incontro segreto’, curated by Jessica Dalli Cardillo and Lorenzo Esposito, will run at the Biblioteca Cionini from October 17 to November 27. The exhibition features archival evidence, bibliographic material, and modern editorial and cinematic adaptations.
The project is a collaborative effort involving Grandezze & Meraviglie, the municipalities of Sassuolo and Modena, the State Archive, the Estense University Library, the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, the University of Bologna, and the National Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts.
