SAT Export Surfruit expands avocado production in La Janda, Spain

SAT Export Surfruit, a cooperative of thirteen partners, cultivates about 2,600 hectares of avocado orchards across the La Janda region, the Seville plain and Albacete. In eight years the company grew from 35 hectares to over 1,000 hectares and plans to reach 1,300 hectares, making it the largest avocado farm in Europe by surface area.

The firm supplies roughly 18,000‑20,000 tonnes of horticultural products each year, with avocado now the dominant crop. Since 2020 it has partnered with retailer Mercadona, initially for pomelo and later for avocado. Today about 65% of Surfruit’s avocado output is sold to Mercadona, accounting for roughly 35% of the cooperative’s revenue. Weekly shipments of 130‑160 tonnes leave logistics hubs in Huévar del Aljarafe (Seville), Guadix (Granada) and Getafe (Madrid) for distribution to more than 300 supermarkets. The selection and packaging lines provide significant employment for women in the region.
