Satellite congestion rises in Low Earth orbit

Low Earth orbit (LEO) is experiencing unprecedented congestion due to a surge in commercial satellite launches. According to data from the Orbital Radar network and U.S. space forces, there are currently over 31,300 cataloged and tracked objects orbiting Earth. A significant portion of this total consists of space debris, including rocket fragments, collision debris, and defunct devices.

Of the objects in orbit, approximately 15,700 are active satellites. SpaceX’s Starlink constellation dominates this sector, with over 11,000 active satellites, accounting for nearly 70% of all operational spacecraft. Additionally, between 3,000 and 4,000 dead satellites are currently drifting in orbit. This represents a massive increase from 2019, when only about 2,200 active satellites were in orbit. The growth is driven by rapid deployment from projects such as Amazon’s Kuiper and China’s Qianfan networks.
