Satellite connectivity strengthens critical infrastructure and emergency communications
The importance of resilient connectivity for critical operations and emergency services is gaining traction through the adoption of satellite technologies. In industrial sectors such as mining, energy, construction, and wind power, connection failures can lead to operational delays, safety risks, and interrupted data transmission for IoT sensors and autonomous vehicles. Implementing hybrid infrastructure—combining private cellular networks with Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites—is becoming a key strategy to eliminate dead zones and ensure continuous data flow in remote locations.
In Portugal, the government has launched the ‘Freguesias Ligadas’ program, a 46 million euro initiative designed to provide redundant communications to local parish councils. The program aims to equip these councils with three complementary tools: SIRESP telephones, satellite phones, and Starlink data connections. This measure ensures that local authorities can maintain contact with municipal services and Civil Protection during extreme weather events or general telecommunications failures. Implementation is expected to reach its horizon by 2026, with some municipalities already installing Starlink antennas to maintain connectivity for both local administration and the public.
