Satellite internet connections multiply tenfold in Spain
Satellite internet connections in Spain have seen a significant surge, increasing tenfold from just over 10,000 at the end of 2022 to approximately 100,000 by the end of 2025, according to a report by the National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC).
This growth is largely attributed to new low Earth orbit satellite constellations, such as SpaceX’s Starlink. Unlike traditional geostationary satellites located 36,000 kilometers away, these newer systems operate much closer to Earth, which reduces latency—a critical factor for video conferencing, online gaming, and remote work.
In regions like León, initiatives such as the Hispasat program ‘Conéctate35’ aim to facilitate satellite access in areas where terrestrial connectivity is insufficient, often working in tandem with ongoing fiber optic deployments to bridge the digital divide in rural and remote locations.
