Satellite technology aids Chile's disaster response as Costa Rica adopts ILO labor treaty

In Chile, the National Space Center of the Air Force has utilized Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite technology from ICEYE to manage extreme weather events. During heavy storms in July, these satellites allowed for the monitoring of critical zones and infrastructure, providing visibility through heavy cloud cover, intense rain, and nighttime conditions where traditional optical satellites often fail.

Experts emphasize that having dedicated, permanent observation capabilities is essential for disaster management. The ability to integrate satellite data with ground segments allows institutions to anticipate risks, support real-time decision-making during emergencies, and accelerate reconstruction efforts.

In Costa Rica, the ratification of International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention 190 is set to take effect on October 2. This treaty is the first international instrument to recognize the right of all individuals to a world of work free from violence and harassment, including gender-based violence. The convention expands the scope of protection to include work-related communications and spaces, shifting the focus toward preventative measures and occupational health and safety.
