Satellite technology expands direct-to-device connectivity for smartphones

Developments in direct-to-device (D2D) satellite technology are expanding the capabilities of standard smartphones to communicate when terrestrial networks are unavailable.

Abu Dhabi-based Space42 and US-based Skylo Technologies successfully completed two-way SMS and emergency SOS testing between a standard Android device and the Thuraya-4 satellite. The test demonstrated that compatible phones can exchange small amounts of data, such as messages and location sharing, without requiring specialized antennas or dedicated satellite terminals. This technology utilizes existing mobile SIM and identity systems without altering core networks. Space42 is also planning a venture called Equatys with Viasat to provide shared satellite infrastructure for mobile operators.

In the consumer sector, Apple has extended its free satellite connectivity service for iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 users until at least September 2026. This service includes Emergency SOS, messaging, Find My location updates, and roadside assistance. While initially introduced with a two-year free window upon the launch of the iPhone 14, Apple has provided multiple extensions to the service's expiration date.
