Satellogic to launch Merlin AI satellite constellation

Satellogic is preparing to launch its Merlin constellation, an AI-driven Earth-observation satellite network. The first satellite is scheduled for launch in October 2026, with the first operational tranche of eight spacecraft expected to provide full service in the first half of 2027. The system is designed to provide daily one-meter resolution remaps, utilizing onboard AI to detect changes in infrastructure, maritime traffic, and pattern-of-life monitoring for defense and civil customers.

The project has sparked debate regarding surveillance capabilities. While some social media claims suggest Palantir is launching thousands of spy satellites for predictive policing, company filings indicate a much smaller initial scale. Palantir and Satellogic have maintained a partnership since 2022, with Palantir utilizing Satellogic imagery for various government contracts.

From a market perspective, Palantir continues to see significant growth in its commercial and sovereign AI sectors. The company has reported 271% year-over-year growth in U.S. commercial total contract value, supported by its specialized AI architecture and various government certifications.
