Satkhira man beaten to death by mob following blasphemy allegations
Wahiduzzaman Shamim, a 38-year-old man, was beaten to death in Debhata, Satkhira, following allegations of religious blasphemy. The incident involved multiple waves of violence, including an attack at a medical facility.
According to reports, tensions rose after an audio recording allegedly containing derogatory remarks about Islam was circulated on social media. Fazlul Haque Ameni reportedly used Facebook Live broadcasts to mobilize a crowd, disclose Shamim’s home address, and incite people to gather outside the medical chamber where Shamim was receiving treatment.
Although police rescued Shamim after an initial assault and moved him to a local health complex, a mob of several hundred people reportedly stormed the hospital. The attackers allegedly pressured medical staff to hand him over and proceeded to beat him again. Shamim later died from his injuries.
The killing has drawn widespread condemnation from political parties and human rights organizations, who have criticized the failure of law enforcement to protect a citizen in state custody. The National Citizens Party (NCP) and other groups have called for investigations into the security breach at the hospital and the arrest of those involved.
