Satna administration to investigate Mandakini River encroachments

The Satna administration in Madhya Pradesh has formed a five-member team to investigate illegal constructions and encroachments along the Mandakini River in Chitrakoot. This decision follows recent flooding that occurred on the night of August 28-29, during which the river's water level reached 145.76 meters, significantly exceeding its high flood level (HFL) of 139.60 meters. The floods also resulted in the destruction of the Hanuman Dhara bridge.

Led by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Majhgawan, the investigation team includes officials from the Municipal Council, Public Works Department, and Water Resources Department. The team will identify structures obstructing the river's natural flow and assess illegal plotting, as well as both government and private constructions. The inquiry will be conducted in accordance with guidelines from the Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal.

District Collector Satish Kumar S. stated that the objective is to mitigate flood damage and ensure public safety during future rises in water levels. The administration will also inspect old or structurally weak buildings and new constructions to ensure compliance with safety regulations. This move follows statements by Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya regarding the removal of encroachments hindering the river's flow.
