Călin Georgescu granted house arrest by Bucharest Tribunal

The Bucharest Tribunal has admitted a request by Călin Georgescu, a former presidential candidate, to replace his preventive arrest with house arrest. The decision, which is not yet final or immediately enforceable, would apply for a 30-day period once it becomes definitive. Georgescu has been in preventive arrest since September 29 following allegations of fraud involving 1.1 million euros.

Prosecutors from DIICOT are expected to appeal the decision. The investigation centers on allegations that Georgescu defrauded businessman Răzvan Leu by proposing a precious metals business involving a 6 million euro credit line. Georgescu also faces charges related to forming an organized criminal group.

If the house arrest is implemented, the court has imposed several restrictions, including the obligation to report periodic information regarding his means of existence and a prohibition on communicating with the victim, witnesses, experts, or other participants in the alleged crimes.
