Saturday Night Live: History and early production challenges

Saturday Night Live premiered on NBC on October 11, 1975. The show was originally titled NBC’s Saturday Night to avoid confusion with an existing ABC program hosted by Howard Cosell. The title was changed to Saturday Night Live in 1976 after Cosell’s show ended.

Creator Lorne Michaels noted that the first season involved significant technical struggles regarding musical audio quality. While earlier performers like Elvis Presley and the Beatles relied on boom microphones, modern recording techniques required different miking strategies to prevent rock artists from sounding poor on television. The first episode featured Billy Preston and Janis Ian, while Paul Simon’s second appearance involved producer Phil Ramone to improve sound quality.

The show’s inception was partly driven by Johnny Carson’s request to NBC in 1974 to stop airing The Tonight Show reruns on weekends so he could save them for his own planned vacations. Early cast and crew highlights include Gilda Radner as the first official cast member, Chevy Chase as an original writer who became a breakout star, and Richard Belzer, who performed in the first season.
