Satwant Singh named first candidate for 2027 Punjab elections

The Akali Dal Waris Punjab De (ADWPD) has announced Satwant Singh as its first candidate for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Singh will contest from the Bassi Pathana constituency in the Fatehgarh Sahib district.

Satwant Singh is the son of Kehar Singh, who was executed following a conviction for his role in the conspiracy to assassinate former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The party’s officiating president, Tarsem Singh—father of jailed MP Amritpal Singh—stated that the decision aligns with the party’s Panthic political agenda. Tarsem Singh emphasized that the party aims to uphold Punjab’s rights and honor families that have made sacrifices for the community, asserting that such families should receive political representation.

The announcement has drawn attention to the Bassi Pathana constituency, where other political figures, including Amrit Kaur Maloa, have previously expressed interest in contesting.
