Satya Nadella and AI Researchers Warn of Concentrated Power and Gradual Societal Impact

A recent study on artificial intelligence development finds that AI’s influence will unfold gradually, reshaping specific job tasks and industry structures rather than causing immediate, large‑scale disruption. The research notes that generative AI lowers costs for product development and entrepreneurship, but may widen wage and wealth gaps. It projects limited overall employment impact in the United States through 2025, with a shift toward roles less prone to automation.

Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella echoed similar concerns, warning that a small group of AI firms such as OpenAI and Anthropic could dominate the economy if left unchecked. He criticised the “fear‑mongering” narrative that frames AI as an imminent job‑killing threat while the same actors seek massive resources. Nadella said Microsoft will promote cheaper, more diverse AI models, integrate alternatives like DeepSeek, and expand its Copilot Cowork AI agent to give customers choice and curb monopolistic control. Both pieces emphasize the need for proactive policy and broader access to AI technology to avoid concentration of power and to manage the long‑term societal effects.
