Satya Nadella slams Anthropic's Fable AI model for overly strict controls

Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella told engineers that Anthropic’s Fable model rejects requests in an “unreasonable” and overly editorial manner, asking “when was the last time you had a creation tool that was so editorially controlled?” The comment was made at an internal meeting on the company’s Copilot AI suite.

Nadella highlighted that only a few firms dominate token‑capital markets and argued that such control makes little economic sense for enterprise customers. His criticism comes as Microsoft, which invested $5 billion in Anthropic and relies on its models for Copilot, faces competition from OpenAI and lower‑cost alternatives. Anthropic said Fable’s safeguards were tightened after a brief shutdown due to U.S. export‑control rules, but the company has not responded to Microsoft’s remarks.
