Satya Nadella warns AI concentration, urges democratized technology

Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella warned that the artificial‑intelligence sector is becoming overly concentrated, saying only a handful of companies should not be allowed to shape the technology’s future. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, he outlined a vision for the next stage of AI focused on low‑cost models, greater user control and broader accessibility. Nadella cautioned that unchecked concentration could threaten jobs, increase security risks and erode public trust, urging firms to earn confidence through tangible action rather than promises.

He highlighted Microsoft’s dilemma over whether to host the Chinese AI firm DeepSea, whose inexpensive models have attracted global attention. Hosting DeepSea could expand the Chinese company's reach and pressure established AI developers. Nadella stressed that AI’s future should be more democratic, with multiple providers offering varied capabilities and pricing, and that the technology should reorganise work rather than replace it entirely.
