Sauda municipality faces surge in data center interest

The municipality of Sauda in Norway is facing a surge of interest from global data center operators following the cancellation of a planned green ammonia factory project. The collapse of the ammonia plant project has left 100 megawatts of power capacity available at the Birkeland industrial park.

Mayor Håvard Handeland expressed concerns regarding the sudden influx of interest, describing the situation as a “Klondike” that has become difficult to manage. He noted that companies from around the world have reached out to establish themselves in the region.

To manage this, Sauda officials have stated they will not simply sell the land to the highest bidder. Instead, the municipality intends to implement stricter requirements for transparency and social responsibility to ensure that power-intensive data centers do not outcompete traditional local industries.
