Saudi Arabia adopts unified standards for commercial data centers
The Saudi Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing has adopted a new set of unified regulatory requirements for commercial data centers. This initiative aims to enhance the readiness of the Kingdom’s digital infrastructure and create a clear regulatory environment to support the growth of the sector.
The regulations apply to independent commercial data centers located both within and outside urban boundaries. Key requirements include ensuring easy access for operation and maintenance teams, availability of essential services such as electricity, telecommunications, and transport, and compliance with approved building systems, including setbacks, heights, and landscaping.
To obtain a license, entities must secure approval from the Civil Defense, provide a valid commercial registration specifying the relevant activity, and obtain approval from the supervising authority. Data centers are also required to adhere to the Saudi Building Code and utilize certified engineering offices for design and supervision. The standards cover international and local requirements for fire protection, cooling systems, electrical power, and backup systems to ensure operational reliability and continuity.
