Saudi Arabia and Arab nations back Niger after Niamey unrest

Arab nations, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Algeria, have expressed solidarity with the government of Niger following an attempted mutiny in the capital, Niamey. The unrest, which occurred between August 28 and 29, involved rebellious soldiers attacking a military base at the main airport and firing upon strategic points near the presidential palace.

Niger's Defense Minister, Salifou Mody, reported that security forces intervened to regain control of the affected areas. Saudi Arabia's Foreign Ministry condemned the events, reaffirming support for Niger's sovereignty and stability. The Kingdom maintains deep security and economic ties with Niger, including cooperation through the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC) and the Sahel Countries Program.

Egypt and Algeria also issued statements of support. Egypt emphasized the importance of preserving Niger's state institutions and national unity, noting that the country's stability is vital for the Sahel region and the African continent. Algeria expressed concern over the events and voiced support for the Nigerien authorities in their efforts to restore order.
