Saudi Arabia and Qatar back Morocco autonomy plan at UN
During the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, conflicting positions were presented regarding the status of Western Sahara.
Saudi Arabia and Qatar reaffirmed their support for Morocco's autonomy initiative. The Saudi representative stated that the plan respects Morocco's sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting its alignment with international law and UN Security Council resolutions. Qatar described the autonomy proposal as a constructive basis for a realistic and lasting political solution to the regional dispute.
Conversely, Algerian representatives and petitioners called for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and independence. They urged the United Nations to complete the decolonization process and protect the territory's natural resources. Dr. Adel Ghebouli, representing the Algerian National Committee of Solidarity with the Sahrawi People, emphasized that the right to self-determination should not be indefinitely postponed or subject to shifts in power dynamics.
