Saudi Arabia announces 14-nation maritime coalition to counter Houthi blockade
Saudi Arabia has announced the formation of a 14-member Multinational Maritime Defence Coalition. The group aims to guarantee freedom of navigation in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Gulf of Aden, specifically seeking to break a Houthi naval blockade against Saudi Arabia that was declared on July 20, 2026.
The founding members include Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan, Egypt, Pakistan, Djibouti, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Bangladesh, and Nigeria. Turkey provides NATO membership and a significant navy, while Pakistan offers strategic importance as a nuclear power. Nigeria is positioned as the coalition’s African representative.
Analysts note that maritime-only coalitions face strategic limitations, as shore-based missiles and drones used by Houthi forces cannot be easily neutralized from the sea. Previous Saudi-led military operations and naval blockades have failed to force a Houthi capitulation, and the group has previously demonstrated the ability to challenge superior military powers.
