Saudi Arabia approved for $5.75 billion U.S. arms sale

The United States has approved a potential $5.75 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia, aimed at enhancing the kingdom’s airborne defense capabilities and regional security. The proposed Foreign Military Sale, notified to Congress by the U.S. Department of State, includes more than 10,000 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) guidance kits and over 10,000 general-purpose bombs, such as the BLU-111 and BLU-117 models.

The package also features FMU-139 fuze systems, target detectors, spare parts, and technical logistics services. According to the State Department, the sale is intended to support U.S. national security objectives by strengthening a major non-NATO ally and improving interoperability between Saudi forces, U.S. forces, and other Gulf Region partners.

Observers note that the inclusion of offensive weaponry and precision-guided kits may influence regional military dynamics and the likelihood of diplomatic engagement between the U.S. and Iran.
