Saudi Arabia Asian Cup 2027 faces potential postponement
The 2027 Asian Cup, scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia from January 7 to February 5, 2027, faces potential delays due to regional security concerns. While Saudi Arabia maintains that the tournament will proceed as planned, recent security incidents, including an attack on Riyadh International Airport that resulted in at least 12 deaths and over 300 injuries, have raised questions about the schedule.
Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, President of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), stated that postponing the tournament by one year to 2028 is a possibility if regional security does not improve. Other sporting events in the country have already been impacted; the Six Kings Slam tennis exhibition was moved from October to December, and the FIFAe Finals 2026 has been postponed.
For participating teams like Vietnam, a delay could offer more time for squad development and tactical refinement under coach Kim Sang-sik, though the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) is currently awaiting official confirmation from the AFC regarding any changes to the schedule.
