Saudi Arabia detains U.S. citizens for filming recent attacks
The U.S. Embassy in Riyadh has issued a security warning stating that U.S. citizens have been detained by Saudi authorities for filming or recording recent attacks and air defense interventions. According to the embassy, capturing, publishing, or sharing images of air defense missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), or crash sites carries legal consequences under local laws.
This warning follows a week of heightened violence in which ten attacks targeted five different airports across Saudi Arabia. These incidents resulted in 20 deaths and hundreds of injuries, causing significant property damage and flight disruptions. The King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh was hit five times, leading to a temporary suspension of operations. Other targeted locations include King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, Abha International Airport, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Jizan, and Najran International Airport.
Due to increased security risks, U.S. embassy personnel are now required to obtain special permission to use any airport in the country. Additionally, staff are prohibited from traveling within 20 miles of the Yemen border, and travel to the provinces of Jizan, Asir, and Najran, as well as the cities of Qatif, Yanbu, and Taif, is subject to special authorization.
