Saudi Arabia has announced the discovery of approximately 110 million tonnes of ore containing high concentrations of rare earth elements and uranium at the Jabal Sayid project in the Medina region. Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman shared these findings during the International Atomic Energy Agency’s General Conference in Vienna.

The discovery is part of a broader national strategy to diversify the Kingdom’s energy mix and reduce reliance on hydrocarbons. The Saudi nuclear program aims to integrate nuclear power into the national grid to support economic growth and water desalination while meeting international safety and non-proliferation standards.

To support these goals, the Kingdom is exploring multiple paths for uranium procurement, including extracting uranium from phosphoric acid produced in the north. Additionally, experimental work conducted in collaboration with the French company Orano has indicated promising economic potential for uranium extraction. This domestic resource development follows a civil nuclear cooperation agreement signed with the United States to facilitate the exchange of technology and expertise.
