Saudi Arabia executes two Bangladeshi nationals in Makkah

Saudi Arabia executed two Bangladeshi nationals, Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar, in the Makkah region on October 14, 2026. According to the Saudi Ministry of Interior, the individuals were arrested for committing an act of indecency inside a mosque. The court sentenced them to death under ta’zir, a form of discretionary punishment under Sharia law, citing the gravity of the offense and the violation of the sanctity of the location.

The Bangladeshi government has expressed concern, noting that neither the Bangladesh Embassy in Riyadh nor the Consulate in Jeddah was notified of the arrests, legal proceedings, or the impending executions. Bangladesh has formally requested an explanation from the Saudi government regarding the circumstances of the case and the lack of diplomatic communication.

State officials in Bangladesh have described the incident as a significant lesson for expatriates, urging citizens to adhere to the laws of their host countries while expressing concern for the welfare of the more than four million Bangladeshis living in Saudi Arabia.
