Saudi Arabia expands ballistic missile manufacturing complex
Satellite imagery analysis reveals that Saudi Arabia is significantly expanding its ballistic missile production complex at al-Duwadimi, located approximately 200 kilometers west of Riyadh. Researchers Sam Lair and Michael Duitsman from the Foreign Policy Research Institute (FPRI) analyzed Planet Labs imagery captured between April 2025 and September 2026, identifying new construction designed to support the production of larger solid-fuel missiles.
The expansion includes a new building at least twice the size of existing structures, featuring casting pits used to pour and harden solid-fuel ingredients into motor casings. A second building may be intended for storing propellant ingredients or completed missile components. The facility includes heavy protective walls designed to divert potential blast waves from nearby structures in the event of an accident.
Analysts suggest the upgrade aims to produce missiles with greater range or heavier payloads, potentially enhancing Saudi Arabia's military independence and its ability to deter Iran or combat Houthi rebels in Yemen. Some experts note that the kingdom's missile technology appears to rely on Chinese designs, citing the presence of DF-15 debris in Yemen. While the expansion could strengthen regional deterrence, experts warn it may also trigger a regional missile race and increase U.S. Congressional opposition to a proposed civilian nuclear agreement between Washington and Riyadh.
