Saudi Arabia expands sign language initiatives for deaf community
Community initiatives in Saudi Arabia are focusing on the social integration of the deaf and hard of hearing through sign language training and specialized awareness programs.
In Tarout, the Tarout Model Kindergarten hosted an awareness evening titled ‘To Find Rest in Them,’ focused on marital stability and understanding. The event saw significant participation from the deaf community, with over 45% of attendees belonging to this group. Sign language interpreter Hussein Abdullah Al-Rubh provided real-time translation, allowing participants to engage with topics such as conflict management, emotional compatibility, and the psychological foundations of building a new family.
Additionally, the Association of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing has implemented 25 training programs in sign language basics. These initiatives target various government and private sector entities to foster better communication and cultural understanding. The association’s strategic goals include promoting early intervention, supporting scientific research, and ensuring the deaf community can become active, integrated members of society through professional training and community partnerships.
