Houthis threaten US targets if Washington supports Saudi Arabia
Houthi rebels in Yemen have issued a direct warning to the United States, stating they will target American interests in the Middle East if Washington provides military support to Saudi Arabia or attempts to seize control of the Bab al-Mandab strait.
Abend Muhammad al-Thaur, a Houthi military advisor, characterized any US military intervention or efforts to secure the strategic waterway as a red line. He threatened to completely close the strait to American vessels and stated that any US air support for Saudi Arabia would make all surrounding American interests legitimate targets.
The threat comes as Saudi Arabia seeks increased military assistance from the US to counter the Iran-backed rebels, who recently gained control of the Bab al-Mandab strait. While the Houthis describe Iran as an ally, they maintain they are independent in their decision-making.
Regional instability is rising as the conflict intensifies. The UN warns that the number of displaced persons in Yemen could rise from 130,000 to over 230,000 due to the renewed fighting.
